The rabies virus is present in the saliva of the animal and hence people may get infected following an exposure i.e. a scratch or a bite or even a lick on broken skin by a rabid animal. In India, the following animals can transmit rabies.

Cats Cows & buffaloes Foxes & Jackals
Sheep & Goats Camels & elephants

Any bites or exposure from the above animals warrants a visit to the doctor.

Some animals that do not transmit rabies are

  • Rats and bandicoots
  • Squirrels
  • Birds

Risk of rabies is very high in the following situations of exposure

  • Exposures in the face-neck region
  • Exposure in multiple sites
  • Bites on the hands, fingers and genitalia
